Summary
This tool is a modern day variation of the scuffle hoe, which was designed to disrupt the growth of weeds efficiently by scraping the surface of the soil, loosening the top inch or so, and cutting the roots of any sprouting weeds. It is best used to quickly clean the surface of cultivated ground (such as vegetable beds) of small annual weed plants. It is not the right hoe for pushing soil or mulch around a bed. The Hula-Ho was first introduced in 1961 as “the weeder with the wiggle.” It has a double-edged blade and a patented rocker action to weed, aerate, mulch and cultivate garden soil by using a push/pull motion that is more scraping than digging. Other names for this type of tool are the stirrup hoe, oscillating hoe, action hoe, pendulum weeder, or swivel hoe
