Summary
Foreign correspondent Lola Wicks, angry over a recent demotion from her Kabul posting, arrives in Montana for some R&R at a friend's cabin--and discovers her friend shot dead. She wants out of Montana but is compelled to stay as a potential witness. Her best hope lies in solving the case herself. But this sure-footed journalist who handled Afghanistan's deadly terrain feels frighteningly off balance in this forgotten corner of her own country. Lola's lone-wolf style doesn't mesh in this place of extreme isolation where people are compelled to rely upon each other in ways she finds unsettling. Nevertheless, she gets entangled romantically. And while unraveling her friend's terrible fate, Lola learns the hard lessons of a fraught economy--and that human bonds matter more than fleeting career success. Ultimately she comes to truly care about the people she meets in Montana--only to miss the warning signals that her own life is in danger
